“Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.” ~Albert Einstein

All matter is energy. If you went to school you surely learned that in science class at some point. But were you ever taught what that means for YOU and YOUR life? Probably not. Most people don’t think about energy on a regular basis. We go about our lives without giving much thought to how we’re relating to or connecting with energy.

Of course, there’s been a lot of hubbub around Law of Attraction and it’s become trendy to latch onto the “good vibes only” maxim. These emphasize the importance of making a concerted effort to be in a high or positive energetic frequency. Unfortunately, most people don’t adequately understand how to do this.

It’s not as simple as “keeping on the sunny side” or visualizing what you want. Life is full of negativity. Sidestepping around this fact will not help you move fully forward. Instead, push directly through the negativity by confronting it head on. Forcing yourself to always be positive or look for the silver lining without acknowledging negative emotions is the same as throwing a blanket over a mess and saying you cleaned up. The mess is still there. And if you reject someone because they’re being too “negative” then guess what? Your vibe is pretty shitty. Genuinely shifting the tendency to flow in lower or negative energetic frequencies means understanding when that happens and what it feels like.

Negative energy needs to be transmuted, not ignored and that typically requires a deep dive into the inner workings of your psyche. You’ve been absorbing messages and energy from the world around you since before you were born. When you pay attention to what those messages have been and how your mind and body process information, you’ll begin to attune to your true energetic frequency.

When you’re vibing low–because who doesn’t sometimes?–notice what you’re thinking and feeling. Allow yourself to experience the emotion and the body sensation. Ask yourself how your thoughts or beliefs are affecting the emotion. Consider whether those thoughts are fear based or rooted in love. Explore ways to reframe your perspective so it is more loving and grounded.

On a regular basis, notice how you feel before, during and after certain activities or when spending time with certain people. Notice how you feel in different spaces/places. All of these things affect the quality of your energy.

Raising your energetic vibration by moving through negativity typically involves deep work. Suggestions include:

  • Heal emotional trauma
  • Build self love, self acceptance, and self trust
  • Learn how to communicate in a healthy way
  • Set clear and comfortable boundaries
  • Grow and strengthen interpersonal relationships
  • Nourish your body with a healthy diet and exercise
  • Balance Chi flow in your body
  • Calm an activated nervous system
  • Develop healthy stress management practices

There are many different therapeutic practices and healing modalities and there is no single right way to do the deep work. Most often a combination of therapies and personal strategies is what’s needed to experience sustained energetic balance. Go to counseling, try Reiki, get regular massages, meditate, do breathwork, spend time outdoors… find what works for you.

Remember, this isn’t about perfection! Negative energy is part of life. The point is to be aware of it, to notice how you experience it, and then to consciously tend to it so you’re not just throwing a pretty blanket over some trash and then wondering why life stinks. In order for you to be positive and attract good things into your life, you have to process and filter what doesn’t serve. Make an effort, orient to hope, believe in yourself, and (my personal cure for all that ails….) open your heart and love.
